Caroline Hillier

Caroline Hillier studied fine art painting at the Wimbledon School of Art in 2005.

Surrey-based Caroline Hillier (born London, 1983) is a figurative artist who explores personal themes around family constructs, relationships, motherhood, nostalgia and female identity, which are surfaced from layers of memories and lived-experiences. Her work reflects the obscurity of memory and is built on fragmented layers of ambiguity, exhuming sub-conscious emotions and distilling a hidden narrative of a reality which lies beneath the surface of what we observe.

“I want my work to capture the essence of a subject, rather than being derailed by appearances”.

Her process is highly sensitive and gradually evolves from the edges of her subconscious. The work is deeply layered, developing over time by building up and scraping away, adding marks which reflects the fragmented memories of what came before.
